But first, a hard truth…

Your success as a copywriter hinges on a whole lot more than just your writing skills

To really, *truly* stand out from the crowd, you need to get a handle on the three most critical pillars of copywriting (AKA The Copywriter Ménage à Trois): Marketing, Mindset & Copy Mastery.

Because even if you know how to craft a compelling headline, structure a high-converting home page, or pull together a TOV guide like a true pro…

It means jack squat if you don’t know how to get yourself in front of your ideal prospects and keep your imposter syndrome in check—

Because you’ll be left to struggle
with sticky situations and

intrusive thoughts just like these…

Empty pipeline? YOU’RE A FRAUD! (oof, your imposter syndrome’s shouty!)

Someone questions your rates? YOU CHARGE TOO MUCH!

Bank account dwindling? WHAT ON EARTH MADE YOU THINK  YOU COULD MAKE THIS WORK?!

How can I use data analytics to increase conversions and create more success stories for my clients?”

How can I manage ALL THE EMOTIONS during the rollercoaster ride of a client project?

I *love* humor copy but I’m worried I’ll stuff it up. What are the most common mistakes and how do I avoid them?

I HAVE A GAZILLION IDEAS! How do I work out which ones are actually profitable?

How can I scale my business… FAST?

How can I capture the voice and style of my client?

Who’s running the show (aka the hosts)

Hey, how’s it going? Kira and Rob here.

You might be scratching your head wondering–

Who the heck are these characters?

And why are they putting on an event like this?

Well…

We’re copywriters, co-founders of The Copywriter Club, and co-hosts of the incredibly popular (at least among discerning copywriters) podcast of the same name.

We met in a mastermind group for copywriters back in 2015. Rob was blown away by Kira’s creativity and personality-driven brand. Kira was impressed with Rob’s business experience and down-to-earth demeanor. (Or at least, that’s the way we like to tell it.) When a few copywriter friends told us we should work together, we thought, “Why not?”

So we created The Copywriter Club, a private group of smarty-pants copywriters working alongside each other to grow our businesses.

It started with the podcast and free Facebook group…

Branched out into a trio of online programs…

And then, in 2018, broke through the confines of the internet with the first ever in-real-life (aka ‘IRL’) event.

We’re not gonna lie. It was a *BIG* gamble —

But we knew the POWER of hanging out in person.

The MAGIC of getting a bunch of big names together in the same room.

And the IMPACT new connections have on your path to success (just ask any of the 5 attendees who’ve gained so much traction over the past 12 months, they secured themselves a spot on this year’s stage).

So, yeah… *of course* we’re doing it all again in 2020.

Where it’s all going down (aka the venue)

We couldn’t hold an event this awesome in just any old locale…

Which is why TCC IRL 2020 is taking place in The Guild Hotel in San Diego, California.

The Guild San Diego, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, is a newer addition to the neighborhood, housed in a century-old Armed Services YMCA. As in, you’ll be sitting in the former YMCA basketball court and we may break into a spontaneous game of *HORSE*—consider yourself warned, practice your game.

TCC IRL is NOT your average event

Here’s a handy comparison table, because you’re busy and
important, and don’t have time for more paragraphs.

Other Events

The Copywriter Club IRL

Have one or two big-name speakers (and a handful of people you’ve never heard of)

Has so many big names in the same room. We’re talking Joel Klettke, Jasmine Star, Momoko Price, Bond Halbert, Kirsty Fanton, Rachael Kay Albers, Justin Blackman, Hillary Weiss, X, and X, and a whole lot more.

Keep the presenters at arm’s length

Creates opportunities for you to get up close and personal with the people on stage. Our presenters are there for the entire event (no disappearing in a puff of smoke once their session is done!) and — just in case you don’t get a chance to chat with your favorites during the two days of workshops — they hang out at the social events, which means you can have a drink with Momoko Price, go on a dinner adventure with Rachael Kay Albers, or stay out late-night with Kira Hug.

Leave it up to you to organize the social side of things

Knows the value of new connections… and *definitely* knows how to throw a good party! We’re big believers that meeting new people is just as important as learning new skills if you want to write better copy, source better clients, and get better paychecks (and both our businesses are living proof of this). This is why we go out of our way to introduce you to as many new people as possible, push you — gently — out of your comfort zone, and provide plenty of opportunities to form meaningful new connections (safely, because #introvertstruggles are real).

Are designed for extraverts, rewarding bold moves and loud voices

Acknowledges that 96.2% of us copywriters are delightfully-awkward introverts and is designed accordingly. Question time? Respectful. Alone time? Supported. Awkward conversation-starters? Strongly encouraged.

Here’s why Prerna Malik decided last year’s TCC IRL was worth the 22-hour flight and week away from her daughter…

Now that I’m back home (and yes, slightly jet lagged!), I want to thank Rob Marsh + Kira Hug for putting on one of the BEST conferences I’ve been to!!

There were SO many copywriters in one room and all that one could see was the camaraderie and transparency. LOVED it.

Meeting my personal copywriting heroes in person = BEST.THING EVER.

The sessions were beyond excellent and I have pages and pages of notes!

Oh, and let’s not forget the FUN!! The kickoff party, speaker dinner, the girls’ only breakfast (sorry, Ryan!!;)), the cocktail party… all of it was AMAZING!!

Guys… all of you made the 22-hour flight, time away from my daughter and a week away from work… all SO worth it.

…and this is why the event was worth attending for Matt Hall, even though his wife was pregnant at the time…

Last year, the conference came at a really challenging time for me. My wife, who was seven months pregnant, got out of the hospital from a bout with pneumonia the day before my flight to New York left. (I’m from LA, btw.)

Making things even more complicated, I had quit my job at a marketing agency about a week and a half before that.

But we thought on it, and it felt like attending was the right move for our family. So I flew to Brooklyn and had a great conference.

Since then, I’ve had at least $8500 come from my decision to attend in March, with a few other things pending.

This is basically money that flowed to me without any compulsion just because of the relationships I’ve built while I was there. I haven’t been hitting anybody up or seriously leveraging those relationships for work.

Everyone’s situation is different. But it was definitely worth it for my family.

…and this is why the event was worth a month’s income and a flight from Australia for Kirsty Fanton

I made a last-minute decision to come, about 3 weeks before the event. And it was a big call – flights from Aus aren’t fun or cheap, and at that stage, showing up meant spending every cent I’d made that month (and then some).

Bus it was *SO* worth it.

The things I learned, people I met, and changes it made in my biz trajectory rewarded that last minute decision ten times over.

It cemented online friendships with two Aussie copywriters who I’m now inviting to my wedding. It gave me the confidence to justify my copy and raise my prices. In fact, the month after TCC IRL was the first time ever I brought in $8K.

If I had my time over, the only thing I’d do differently is book that ticket earlier!

FAQs

“I *REALLY* want to come…  but I’m on the other side of the world. Is this worth the plane ticket, cricked neck, and jet lag?”

Almost half of our 2019 attendees flew in from outside the United States. We had copywriters from India, France, Australia, Scotland, Denmark, and Canada. Several people even came from Florida. And you know what? Almost every single one of these copywriters is making the journey again this year.

“Do I have to stay at the hotel? It’s a little bit out of my budget…”

Not at all! A lot of our attendees are staying elsewhere or sharing rooms to keep costs low, so do whatever works for you. There are plenty of Airbnbs in the neighborhood, as well as a bunch of budget-friendly hotels to choose from. If you choose to stay at the hotel, we’ve negotiated a great rate (it’s reasonable for San Diego). Check out The Guild Hotel for more info.

“Are all the events included in my ticket?”

Your ticket includes the two full days of presentations, plus access to the Meet & Greet, Dinner Adventures, and Cocktail Party. Coffee and snacks are included, but alcohol and main meals are on you.

“I came last year and it was AWESOME! But will this just be more of the same?”

The vibe will be the same, there’ll be very similar opportunities to mingle and make new connections, and you’re stuck with us as hosts — but that’s where the similarities end. We’ve got a fresh line-up of speakers, and the small handful of returnees (Joanna Wiebe, Sam Woods, and Joel Klettke) are all tackling totally different topics. We’ve also got new chairs…

“I feel silly asking this… but what the heck do I wear??”

Whatever you’re comfortable in! Even though we’ll get serious about the business of copy, TCC IRL is all about showing up as yourself — not spending six hours a day in a stiff suit and uncomfortable shoes. The only item we suggest? A warm jacket. It can be chilly in San Diego in the evening.

“Is there anything special I need to bring?”

Nope! As long as you’ve got something to take notes with (whether that’s the latest Mac or old-school pen ‘n paper) you’ll have everything you need. You *might* want to bring your phone along too, so you can bring back photographic evidence of the time you touched <insert your favorite copywriter>’s elbow.
